Frequently Asked Questions

What types of consultancy services do you offer?

I provide specialised advisory services focused at the intersection of technology, strategy, and policy. This typically includes technology roadmapping and foresight, market landscape analysis for emerging technologies, strategic reviews of R&D portfolios, and policy impact assessments. I also offer expert workshops for leadership teams and provide due diligence support for investors evaluating technology-centric opportunities.

What kind of organisations do you typically work with?

My clients are diverse and include technology start-ups and scale-ups seeking to refine their strategy, established corporations needing to navigate technological disruption, non-governmental organisations, supra-national organisations, public sector bodies and government agencies developing evidence-based policy, and venture capital firms requiring deep technical insight. The common thread is a need for rigorous, independent analysis to inform high-stakes decisions.

What is the unique value of engaging you as an independent consultant over a larger firm?

The primary advantage is direct access to senior-level, domain-specific, specialist expertise. When you engage my services, you work directly with me throughout the entire process. This ensures agility, deep contextual understanding, and a highly tailored approach that larger, more layered firms can struggle to provide. It combines the rigorous thinking of an academic with the pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset of a strategist, offering exceptional value and a clear return on investment.

What does a typical consultancy engagement look like from start to finish?

Every engagement is tailored, but most follow a clear structure.
  1. Scoping Call: We begin with a confidential, no-obligation discussion to understand your challenge and objectives.
  2. Proposal: I deliver a concise proposal outlining the scope of work, key deliverables, timeline, and a fixed-fee structure.
  3. Contracting: Depending on the type of work and alignment, this may be delivered contractually through a University Consulting Partner, or directly depending on the type of engagement.
  4. Engagement: The project kicks off. This phase involves deep analysis, stakeholder interviews, and collaborative workshops as needed, with regular progress updates.
  5. Delivery & Debrief: I deliver the final report, presentation, or roadmap and conduct a thorough debrief session with your team to ensure the insights are fully embedded and actionable.

My organisation's challenge is very specific. How do we know if your expertise is the right fit?

This is a crucial question. My expertise lies in a deep understanding of core technological principles and strategic frameworks, which allows me to adapt my approach to a wide range of specific challenges.
From this website, I hope you are able to get a sense of my skills and expertise - However, the best way to determine a fit is through our initial scoping call. I am always transparent about the alignment between my skills and your needs; if I am not the right expert, I will be the first to say so and may be able to recommend someone from my network who is.
For larger projects that require additional academic expertise, there is the opportunity to engage with larger teams through a University Consultancy Partnr.

Are you available for both short-term advisory roles and longer-term projects?

Yes, I offer flexible engagement models to suit different needs. This can range from a single-day strategic workshop or a short, intensive report, to a longer-term retainer for ongoing advisory support over several months, or a multi-month engagement to deliver a significant project. The model is determined by your organisation's specific goals.
Within my primary role as a full-time academic, there is scope for external engagement as a consultant; with some flexibility, however, roles of a more serious scope and scale would need to be by consultation with my employer.

How do we start a conversation about a potential project?

The best way to begin is to send me a brief email or use the contact form on this website with a short summary of your challenge. We can then schedule a brief introductory call to discuss your requirements in more detail, with full confidentiality and no commitment on your part.
